Make Your Garden Attractive To Wild Birds
Posted Under: Birds
There are a variety of ways to attract the wild birds. The best way is to provide them with a safe place to eat and the food they love. Bird feeders are ideal for providing food for them. They are really helpful to the birds during the winter when food is hard to find.
Attract different species by setting up feeding stations containing their favorite foods. For example finches feed on small thistle seeds and specially designed bird feeders that allow the finches to feed easily can be purchased. Spillage can be prevented by using tube feeders which also keep the seeds dry and mold free. Watch the birds feed from the comfort of you home with a window bird feeder.
You can purchase bird feeders specially designed for goldfinches, woodpeckers and hummingbirds. Attract the birds by placing them close to your birdhouse in a safe place. Whichever type of feeder you use be sure to check it regularly to ensure the food is dry and free from mold. Make sure you clean spilled food up regularly or it will attract pests such as ants and wasps.
Birds benefit most from feeding during the winter but food can be scarce in other seasons too. Help the wild birds by providing food for them all through the year. Put out suitable food for fledglings during the breeding season as they can be severly affected by food shortages.
Provide pans of water or bird baths for a safe place for them to drink, preen and clean their feathers. Set out water containers at different levels as some species prefer to drink and bathe at ground level, others prefer above ground containers. Only fill containers to a few inches and place containers away from bird feeders as birds like quiet places to bathe and preen. Running water sounds will attract the birds. Attach a water dripper to your bird bath. It will attract the birds and also prevent mosquitoes breeding in the water.
The birds will have a better sense of security if you provide a natural environment. An area of the garden can be allowed to grow wild to make them an attractive place.
